Building Victim-Centered, Trauma-Informed Criminal Justice System Capacities in Slovakia. The mission of the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) is to keep Americans safe by countering crime, illegal drugs, and instability abroad. The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) is at the forefront of responding to these challenges, uniting these overarching themes through our foreign assistance programs, diplomatic engagement, and policy coordination. During and after this initiative, Slovak criminal justice system personnel (law enforcement, prosecutors, judges) will receive training on and increase the use of a victim-centered, traumainformed approach as they detect, investigate, prosecute, and adjudicate transnational crimes, including those related to corruption enabling the activities of criminal networks in the context of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This approach will enhance the efficiency of investigations and prosecutions of these crimes in Slovakia by generating more suitable evidence from witness statements and will increase the protection of vulnerable victims. The grantee’s approach to the capacity building activities will also emphasize respecting and protecting human rights in accordance with EU and international obligations. The project supports INL’s goal to strengthen criminal justice systems to support stable, rightsrespecting partners with the objective of building foundational elements of foreign criminal justice systems that are able to address shared threats, promote human rights, and provide fair and equal justice to all citizens. Furthermore, the project contributes to U.S. Embassy Bratislava’s goal of expanding bilateral and multilateral cooperation to strengthen regional and global security and stability and confront hybrid threats, with the objective of supporting EU, NATO, and other U.S. allies in our shared non-military efforts to confront threats to regional and global security and stability while aiding the development of aspiring alliance partners.
