Funds local and regional identification of transportation-related climate vulnerabilities through the development of climate adaptation plans, as well as project-level climate adaptation planning to identify adaptation projects and strategies for transportation infrastructure.; Climate change adaptation aims to anticipate and prepare for climate change impacts to reduce the damage from climate change and extreme weather events. Adaptation is distinct from, but complements, climate change mitigation, which aims to reduce GHG emissions. This funding is intended to advance adaptation planning on California’s transportation infrastructure, including but not limited to roads, railways, bikeways, trails, bridges, ports, and airports. The State-funded Climate Adaptation Planning grants ($50 million) will support local and regional identification of transportation-related climate vulnerabilities through the development of climate adaptation plans, as well as project-level adaptation planning to identify adaptation projects and strategies for transportation infrastructure. Applicants who have adaptation planning efforts underway as well as those who have not yet started adaptation work are encouraged to apply. The Climate Adaptation Planning grant is a category within the Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant Program, which was created to support the California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans) Mission: Provide a safe and reliable transportation network that serves all people and respects the environment.
