City of Sacramento Neighborhood Clean-up Grant Program
This program provides financial assistance to neighborhood and nonprofit groups in Sacramento for organizing community clean-up events that promote environmental responsibility and neighborhood pride.
The Neighborhood Clean-up Grant Program is an initiative led by the City of Sacramento’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division to support local community clean-up efforts by providing financial assistance to neighborhood and nonprofit groups. The primary goal is to assist with the costs associated with organizing and executing community-based events that collect and remove trash and debris from public areas, thereby fostering neighborhood pride and environmental responsibility. Grants of up to $800 per event are available on a reimbursement basis. Groups may apply for up to three grants citywide per fiscal year, making the maximum funding accessible to a single group $2,400 annually. Events must occur within Sacramento city limits and focus on cleaning the public right-of-way, including city streets, roads, sidewalks, and alleyways. Projects involving green waste and weeding in these areas are also eligible. The eligible applicants include neighborhood associations, homeowner associations, community and neighborhood groups, not-for-profit organizations, service clubs, and church groups. Individuals and for-profit entities are explicitly excluded. All applicants must be formally organized and able to submit supporting documentation such as articles of incorporation, tax ID numbers, IRS 501(c) letters, or proof of registration with the California Secretary of State or Attorney General’s Office. Organizations that are not formally organized are encouraged to collaborate with an eligible entity. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the fiscal year and must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the scheduled event. Approved projects must be completed within 120 days of grant approval. The application may be submitted through an online form, via email, or by postal mail. Review and initial response from RSW staff will occur within five business days. Eligible expenses under the grant include materials and supplies for trash removal, equipment rentals, fuel costs, disposal costs, volunteer event promotion and recruitment, and refreshments for volunteers (limited to 20% of the reimbursement). Ineligible costs include wages, travel, planning, research, and disposal of appliances, e-waste, and hazardous waste. Applicants must choose one of two city-approved disposal options: the use of city dump coupons or services from a pre-approved waste hauler. Approved applicants will sign a formal agreement with the City outlining the grant terms. Reimbursements are processed after submission and approval of expense documentation, and a single check will be issued within 45 days. If the total reimbursement exceeds $599, additional tax forms are required. The City maintains the authority to request further documentation, adjust disposal methods, and terminate the agreement if necessary. For questions or submission, contact sacrecycle@cityofsacramento.org or call 916-808-4846. Applications should be mailed to the Recycling and Solid Waste Division, ATTN: Cleanup Grant Program, 2812 Meadowview Road, Building 1, Sacramento, CA 95832.
