Public Art Grants 2026
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations, government units, and public schools in southwestern Minnesota for large-scale public art projects that foster community engagement and sustainable arts access.
The Public Art Grants program for Fiscal Year 2026 is administered by the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council (SMAC). This grant initiative aims to support large-scale public art projects that create a lasting legacy in the southwestern Minnesota region. Funded projects must promote sustainable arts access and demonstrate a continuing community impact over several years. Organizations seeking support for initial planning activities—such as community input sessions or feasibility studies—may first apply for a separate Quick Support for Organizations grant. Grants of up to $20,000 are available, and applicants are required to contribute a 20% cash match. The total SMAC grant funding available to any organization per fiscal year is capped at $20,000. This grant program is made possible through appropriations from Minnesota’s arts and cultural heritage fund, voted on by Minnesota residents. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, official government units (city, county, tribal, state), and public schools undertaking community-based projects. Organizations without nonprofit status may apply using a fiscal sponsor, provided the sponsor meets all eligibility requirements and assumes legal responsibility for the project and funds. Applications for the Public Art grant are due by December 10, 2025, with a draft review available upon request by November 26, 2025. Panel review will occur on January 8, 2026, followed by board action on January 27, 2026. Projects may commence as early as February 1, 2026, and must conclude by June 30, 2027. Applications may be submitted online, via email, or in print. Required materials include artist resumes or bios, work samples, budget details, board member lists, and fiscal sponsor agreements if applicable. Evaluation of applications is based on four criteria: artistic quality and merit (46%), impact on participants and audience (28%), outreach to underserved groups (13%), and organizational capacity to complete the project (13%). Applicants can earn up to nine additional percentage points for meeting certain priority conditions such as being a first-time applicant, serving underrepresented communities, or applying from underfunded counties. Grantees must sign an electronic contract within 30 days of award notification. Full funding is disbursed upon receipt of the signed contract and 30 days after the project start date. Projects must credit SMAC and the arts and cultural heritage fund in all publicity. Final reports are due within 60 days after project completion. For assistance or accommodations, applicants may contact SMAC by phone at 507-537-1471 or 800-622-5284, or via email at [email protected].
