Grant Description

The NSF 22-628: Ocean Sciences Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (OCE-PRF) program supports early-career scientists conducting research in ocean sciences. The program is aimed at fostering professional growth, facilitating interdisciplinary collaborations, and providing access to unique research facilities. Fellows are expected to conduct research on topics aligned with NSF's Division of Ocean Sciences priorities and engage in activities promoting diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. A professional development component focusing on mentoring and community engagement is also included. Fellowships are funded for two years, offering $90,000 in the first year and $92,000 in the second, with $75,000 and $77,000 allocated for salary, respectively. An additional $15,000 per year is provided for research expenses, including supplies, travel, and other research-related costs. Fellows must affiliate with a U.S.-based host organization and are encouraged to select organizations distinct from their previous affiliations to broaden professional experiences. Host organizations must provide letters certifying support, facilities, and the ability to administer the fellowship. Eligible applicants are U.S. citizens, nationals, or permanent residents who have received their Ph.D. within the past 24 months or will earn it before the fellowship starts. They must demonstrate strong potential for leadership in ocean sciences and provide a project plan within NSF's oceanographic research priorities. Proposals must include at least one mentor, with additional mentors encouraged for interdisciplinary work and professional development. Applications are submitted through Research.gov or Grants.gov by the candidate themselves. Required documents include a project summary, description, budget justification, data management plan, letters from host organizations and mentors, and certifications of eligibility. Proposals undergo a rigorous merit review process based on intellectual merit, broader societal impacts, and the candidate's qualifications. Proposals that do not meet submission requirements or eligibility criteria are returned without review. Deadlines fall annually on the second Friday of November, with upcoming target dates on November 8, 2024, and beyond. Fellows must begin their appointments between July 1 and December 1 following the award year. NSF encourages early preparation and submission to avoid technical difficulties, with full details on submission processes and eligibility provided in the program solicitation and related guides. This program aims to increase participation of underrepresented groups in ocean sciences and emphasizes open science practices. Fellows must share their research data and outcomes broadly, in alignment with NSFโ€™s mission to advance science, education, and public engagement. For questions or further details, applicants are directed to contact NSF program officers listed in the solicitation.
