Embark Program
This program provides support and funding for new entrepreneurs from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds in the outdoor industry to help them develop their business ideas into viable ventures.
The REI Co-op Path Ahead Ventures Embark program is a collaborative initiative between REI Co-op Path Ahead Ventures and Founded Outdoors, aimed at fostering entrepreneurship within communities of color in the outdoor industry. REI Co-op’s Path Ahead Ventures supports founders of color through mentorship, infrastructure, customer connections, and capital investment. Founded Outdoors works to break down barriers in the outdoor industry for entrepreneurs from culturally and racially diverse backgrounds. The combined mission is to create a more inclusive and representative outdoor industry by providing tools and opportunities to new entrepreneurs. Embark is a three-month virtual program designed to support new and aspiring entrepreneurs from Black, Indigenous, Latina/o/x, and Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The program helps participants turn early-stage ideas into viable businesses within the outdoor sector. Eligible participants include those with a business idea at the design or prototype stage, or those who have started a company within the past year that has not yet begun manufacturing and has generated less than $20,000 in revenue. The business must focus on products, services, or experiences that enhance outdoor life. The program offers a structured and supportive environment for up to 20 selected entrepreneurs. Over three months, participants engage in workshops, fireside chats, and office hours, learning best practices from industry, startup, and domain experts. Topics covered include customer interviews, market testing, prototyping, business models, pricing, branding, go-to-market strategies, social media, finance, and pitching. Participants are encouraged to collaborate with peers, share experiences, and build a supportive community. Upon completing the program, each founder receives a $5,000 grant to invest in building their business. The program timeline includes key dates: applications open on May 19, 2025, and close on June 18, 2025, at 11:59 PM PT. Accepted participants are notified on July 11, 2025. The program begins with an in-person kickoff at REI HQ on September 4, 2025, and concludes with a virtual graduation event on November 21, 2025. To apply, prospective participants must submit an application detailing their background, business vision, and goals. The selection criteria focus on the applicant’s commitment to building their business and how the program can help them grow. The program is open to individuals based in the United States who are at least 18 years old. U.S. citizenship is not required. Accommodations for individuals with disabilities and language translation assistance are available upon request. For more information or questions about the application process, applicants can contact [email protected].
