Grant Description

The AAAS Award for Scientific Freedom and Responsibility is presented by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), a prominent multidisciplinary scientific society committed to advancing science and serving society through initiatives in science policy, international programs, science education, and public engagement. The award recognizes individuals or organizations that have demonstrated outstanding contributions to scientific freedom and responsibility, particularly under challenging or adverse circumstances. This award acknowledges efforts that embody the values of trustworthy science conducted with integrity and in support of human rights. Qualifying actions may involve protecting public health, safety, or welfare; advocating for justice; defending the freedom and rights of scientists; or using scientific expertise to support accountability for serious human rights abuses. The award is intended to highlight exemplary conduct in scientific responsibility and its alignment with ethical practices and human dignity. The honor includes a cash prize of $5,000, a commemorative plaque, and complimentary registration and travel accommodations to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting. Nominations are open to both U.S. and international candidates and may recognize individuals, groups, or entire organizations. Self-nominations are also accepted. Candidates must be living at the time of their nomination. Nominations for the 2026 cycle are accepted from April 15, 2025, to June 30, 2025. Required nomination materials include contact information for the nominator and nominee, a brief citation, a detailed nomination rationale (up to three pages), optional supporting documents, a CV or resume (max five pages per nominee), and at least one letter of support. Self-nominations must include at least two support letters. All materials must be submitted in English, and nominee consent must be obtained. Evaluations will be based on several criteria: demonstration of scientific freedom and/or responsibility, relevance and importance of the issue addressed, intellectual contributions, and personal courage. Final award decisions are made by the AAAS Board of Directors following a review by a multidisciplinary committee. For the 2025 cycle, the award recipient is Encieh Erfani from the Perimeter Institute in Canada, honored for advocating academic freedom in Iran. Past awardees include scientists recognized for whistleblowing, advancing justice, and promoting public welfare through scientific efforts. AAAS emphasizes ethical conduct and inclusivity in its recognition process.
