Grant Description

The Consumers Energy Foundation offers grants to nonprofit and qualified governmental organizations to support projects that benefit Michigan’s people, environment, and economic prosperity. The foundation is committed to reducing poverty, increasing educational attainment, protecting natural resources, and supporting vibrant communities, particularly in the Lower Peninsula where Consumers Energy has operations. Organizations must align their grant requests with one or more of the foundation’s three key focus areas: People, Planet, and Prosperity. People initiatives may involve high school graduation support, STEM or skilled trades education, or self-sufficiency programs for vulnerable populations. Planet initiatives focus on preserving or restoring land, water, or air quality in Michigan. Prosperity initiatives should enhance local economies, create desirable neighborhoods, foster entrepreneurship, or attract tourism. Funding is generally intended for capital investments or innovative programs and campaigns that produce measurable outcomes. Applicants must include relevant metrics in their applications. While there are no fixed deadlines, the Consumers Energy Foundation’s board meets periodically throughout the year to review submissions. Organizations can apply more than once annually if requests pertain to different projects. Ineligible applicants include individuals, religious or political organizations, clubs, and groups that do not meet IRS criteria for charitable status. The foundation does not fund energy-related costs, debt reduction, scholarships, or event sponsorships. Applications must be submitted online. Applicants are encouraged to review detailed guidance on alignment with foundation priorities and gather supporting metrics prior to starting. Contact support is available through Consumers Energy’s general and business lines.
