Grant Description

The 2025 Community Journalism Program, hosted by HumanitiesDC, offers a free, 14-week training course designed to empower DC residents with the skills needed to tell impactful local stories. Participants will learn core journalism skills such as sourcing credible information, conducting interviews, writing and editing articles, and pitching stories to local media. The program culminates in the publication of a news story by each participant and concludes with a celebratory event. Eligible applicants must be residents of Washington, DC, aged 18 or older, who can commit to attending the entire program, including the final celebration on May 19, 2025. Sessions will be held every Monday evening from February 10 to May 12, 2025, alternating between in-person workshops and small group mentorship meetings. The seven in-person workshops, focused on journalism fundamentals, will take place at the Anacostia Arts Center. Alternate sessions, held virtually or at various city locations, will involve mentorship and story editing by professional journalists. Accommodations are available to support participants throughout the application process and program.
