Grant Description

The Literacy Opportunity Fund is a grant program administered by ProLiteracy and generously supported by the Nora Roberts Foundation. ProLiteracy is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing adult literacy across the United States. The fund is designed to assist U.S.-based nonprofit organizations that are directly engaged in providing literacy services to adult learners. The purpose of the Literacy Opportunity Fund is to support general operating expenses for eligible organizations. This includes funding for staff salaries, teacher stipends, technology, supplies, equipment, and space rental. Alternatively, applicants may request support for specific projects, events, or new program development that aligns with their literacy missions. Applicants must be registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits and must provide direct literacy services to students. Organizations operating outside of the U.S., or those that solely function as book distributors or lending libraries, are not eligible. An organization may only receive one Literacy Opportunity Fund grant per calendar year. Applications for the Literacy Opportunity Fund are accepted quarterly, with submission deadlines on January 3, April 1, July 1, and October 1. The grant portal opens approximately one month before each deadline. For the current cycle, applications will be accepted from June 1 to July 1. Award notifications are typically sent by email within eight weeks following the submission deadline. Applicants are encouraged to prepare a concise 2–3 sentence summary describing their literacy program, the target population served, and how the funds will be utilized. Although no matching funds are required, organizations must ensure compliance with all eligibility requirements before applying. For further inquiries or clarification, applicants may contact the grants administrator via email at grants@proliteracy.org or call 1-888-528-2224.
