Grant Description

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Analysis Program provides funding for research in various branches of mathematical analysis. The program supports studies in areas such as complex, harmonic, and real analysis, as well as dynamical systems, ergodic theory, functional analysis, mathematical physics, operator theory, operator algebras, partial differential equations, and calculus of variations. This initiative aims to advance theoretical and applied mathematics by funding innovative research efforts that contribute to the development of analytical methods and their applications. Eligibility for funding through the Analysis Program is primarily directed toward researchers and institutions involved in mathematical sciences. Typical applicants include academic institutions, research organizations, and individual principal investigators with expertise in mathematical analysis. The program also supports conferences and workshops, which must be submitted under a separate solicitation titled “Conferences and Workshops in the Mathematical Sciences.” Proposals for such events must be submitted at least eight months before the intended start date. Funding provided through this program can be used to support various research activities, including salary support for principal investigators, postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students, as well as expenses related to data analysis, computational modeling, and dissemination of findings. However, funds may not be used for purposes outside the scope of research, including activities not directly related to mathematical analysis. Conference and workshop funding is available to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers. Applicants must submit proposals following the NSF Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG) or the NSF Grants.gov Application Guide, depending on the submission method. Proposals must meet all specified requirements to be considered for review. Any proposals submitted outside the designated submission window will be returned without review. Adherence to formatting, documentation, and content guidelines is essential for a successful application. The selection process for funding includes a thorough peer review based on the intellectual merit and broader impacts of the proposed research. Reviewers assess the significance of the research questions, the soundness of the methodology, and the potential contributions to the field of mathematical analysis. Additionally, broader impacts such as educational outreach, workforce development, and potential societal applications are considered in funding decisions. For the 2025 funding cycle, the full proposal submission window is from September 16 to September 30, with the same timeline applying in subsequent years. Proposals must be submitted by 5 p.m. local time of the submitting organization. Applicants are encouraged to carefully review all program guidelines and ensure that submissions comply with the current NSF policies and procedures. For further information, applicants can contact program officers Marian Bocea, Jan Cameron, Wing Suet Li, or Andrew Raich at the Division of Mathematical Sciences within the Directorate for Mathematical and Physical Sciences. Additional resources, including information on previously funded projects, are available through the NSF website.

Additional Requirements

The following organizations are eligible to submit proposals to NSF: (a) Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs)  Two- and four-year IHEs (including community colleges) accredited in, and having a campus located in the U.S., acting on behalf of their faculty members. IHEs located outside the U.S. fall under paragraph 2(c) below. Special Instructions for International Branch Campuses of U.S. IHEs If the proposal includes funding to be provided to an international branch campus of a U.S. IHE (including through use of subawards and consultant arrangements), the proposer must explain the benefit(s) to the project of performance at the international branch campus and justify why the project activities cannot be Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide I-6 NSF 24-1 performed at the U.S. campus. Such information must be included in the project description. The box for “Funding of an International Branch Campus of a U.S. IHE” must be checked on the Cover Sheet if the proposal includes funding for an international branch campus of a U.S. IHE. (b) Non-profit, Non-academic Organizations  Independent museums, observatories, research laboratories, professional societies, and similar organizations located in the U.S. that are directly associated with educational or research activities. (c) Tribal Nations  The term “Tribal nation” means an American Indian or Alaska Native tribe, band, nation, pueblo, village, or community that the Secretary of the Interior acknowledges as a federally recognized tribe pursuant to the Federally Recognized Indian Tribe List Act of 1994, 25 U.S.C. §§ 5130- 5131. 2. The following organizations may be eligible to submit proposals to NSF: (a) For-profit Organizations  U.S.-based commercial organizations, including small businesses, with strong capabilities in scientific or engineering research or education and a passion for innovation. An unsolicited proposal from a for-profit organization may be funded when the project is of special concern from a national point of view, special resources are available for the work, or the proposed project is especially meritorious. NSF is interested in supporting projects that couple industrial use-inspired challenges and research resources with those of IHEs; therefore, the Foundation especially welcomes proposals for cooperative projects involving both IHEs and industry. Specific NSF funding opportunities also may make for-profit organizations eligible for submission of proposals to the Foundation. US-based affiliates or subsidiaries of foreign organizations must contact the cognizant NSF program officer prior to preparing and submitting a proposal to NSF. (b) State and Local Governments  As programmatically necessary and as provided for in a solicitation, State and local governments may be eligible to submit proposals.
