2024 Fish Habitat Program

The Fish Habitat Program, administered by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), is designed to assist county conservation boards in developing and enhancing fish habitats. This initiative supports projects that improve the quality of fish habitats in ponds, lakes, pits, and streams through physical placement of fish habitats, construction of aeration systems, dredging, and more. The program aims to sustain, develop, and improve sport fisheries, contributing to improved water quality and creating recreational angling opportunities. All county conservation boards are eligible to participate, with the DNR providing up to 90% of project funding. Projects are evaluated and selected based on their contribution to fish habitat quality, watershed management, and the provision of angling opportunities. Projects must be completed within 24 months of grant approval. The program aims for a comprehensive approach to fish habitat improvement, prioritizing projects that address the root causes affecting fish habitats and populations. Available funds are divided equally between the six county districts. Approximately $70,000 will be available this grant cycle. 2024 deadline: November 29th Grant renewed every year. Grant Annual Closing date: Last working day in November of each year.
