Grants available for Nonprofit Affordable Housing Projects in Hawaii
This initiative provides funding to Hawaii-based nonprofit organizations dedicated to developing and supporting affordable housing projects for local communities.
The Nareit Hawaii Community Giving Initiative, operated under the Nareit Foundation, is focused on increasing access to affordable housing throughout Hawaii. This initiative invites grant proposals exclusively from Hawaii-based nonprofit organizations that are actively involved in charitable activities supporting affordable housing development and services. The goal is to strengthen local communities by bolstering efforts that make housing more accessible to residents of Hawaii. The 2025 grant cycle opened on May 12, 2025, and will close on June 13, 2025, at 5 PM Hawaii Standard Time. During this period, eligible nonprofit organizations may apply via an online application link provided on the initiative’s website. Selected grantees will be notified during the week of September 12, 2025. Applications are particularly encouraged for “shovel-ready” projects, as these will be given priority consideration. Funding is distributed after awardees sign an acceptance letter that outlines the conditions of the award. To qualify, applicant organizations must hold tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and must not be classified as private foundations. Moreover, eligible organizations must operate within Hawaii and align with the initiative's mission to support affordable housing. Applications from organizations that deny services based on race or engage in other unlawful discriminatory practices will not be considered. Once a grant is approved, funds are administered by the Nareit Foundation, reinforcing their commitment to community investment and housing accessibility. Organizations previously awarded under this program may also be eligible for new funding, providing a pathway for continued partnership and project development. For further questions or clarification regarding the application or eligibility criteria, applicants can reach out to the initiative at [email protected]. The administrative office is located at 1003 Bishop Street, Suite 2700, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813.
