Grant Description

The DOT/DNR Fund is designed to support the beautification of roadside areas along primary highway system corridors through the use of plant materials. The program focuses on improving the aesthetics of these areas by funding the planting of seeds or live plants on highway rights-of-way, including highway extensions. Any tax-levying body is eligible to request funding for projects under this program. To qualify, the proposed planting site must be located on a primary highway right-of-way, and the program will only cover the costs associated with the materials and the installation of plantings. To apply, applicants must submit a letter of request that includes a detailed listing of the plant materials, a site plan, and a cost estimate. Additionally, a permit for highway plantings must be approved as part of the application. The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) will review the submitted plans and specifications to ensure they meet program requirements. Applicants can request up to $100,000 per year, and there is no minimum request amount. Applications are accepted year-round, and funding is provided on a first-come, first-served basis, depending on the availability of funds. The program has an annual funding limit of $300,000. Once an application is submitted, the DOT roadside development staff will review and evaluate it, with approval typically taking up to 90 days. Special project requirements include obtaining approval for a DOT Sponsorship of Highway Plantings permit, which is evaluated by district staff as part of the application process. For further information or to submit an application, contact the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Design Bureau. Specific inquiries can be directed to Rachel Harris, the Roadside Development coordinator, via phone or email.
