Community-Built Playgrounds
This grant provides funding and support for communities in specific U.S. cities to create new playgrounds for low-income and special needs populations, ensuring safe and engaging play spaces through community collaboration and fundraising efforts.
Community-Built Playspace grants from KABOOM! support the development of safe, engaging, and community-designed playgrounds in underserved areas across the United States. As one of the few public spaces specifically created for children, playgrounds play a vital role in fostering strong, vibrant neighborhoods. KABOOM!, a nationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to ending playspace inequity, partners with local organizations to build customized playgrounds tailored to each community’s needs. This program is made possible through collaboration with Landscape Structures, KABOOM!’s primary playground equipment supplier. Successful applicants to the Community-Built Playspace program receive a new, custom-designed playground along with additional handcrafted amenities that reflect the character and culture of the host community. The program emphasizes deep community involvement by engaging local stakeholders in a collaborative planning and construction process. Selected communities will partner closely with KABOOM! staff—including Community Engagement and Build Managers—over an 8- to 10-week period to organize, prepare, and implement the project. Grantees must serve low-income and/or special needs communities and demonstrate a clear need for a new or replacement playground. Eligible applicants must either own the land or hold a long-term lease with landowner approval for playground construction. In addition to providing the site, grantees must complete necessary site preparation—including removing old structures and ensuring a flat, dirt surface of at least 2,500 square feet. Other logistical requirements include soil testing, obtaining construction permits, and arranging for utilities checks. Applicants are also responsible for contributing to the project through local fundraising efforts. KABOOM! provides guidance throughout the process, helping communities strengthen relationships and build skills in fundraising, media outreach, and leadership. In-kind contributions such as meals, tools, restroom facilities, and waste disposal for Build Week are also expected. On Build Day, communities are encouraged to mobilize approximately 100 volunteers for the hands-on construction of the playspace. Once complete, grantees must assume full ownership and maintenance of the playground. The program is only available in selected U.S. cities or metropolitan areas where KABOOM! currently has active opportunities. Interested applicants should consult KABOOM!’s website to determine current geographic availability and eligibility.
