Trees Forever Tree Removal Grant
This grant provides funding to Illinois communities designated as Tree City USA to remove dead or diseased trees and support future replanting efforts in disadvantaged areas.
Trees Forever, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, offers competitive tree removal grants aimed at assisting Illinois communities recognized as Tree City USA in managing their urban forests. These grants are specifically designed to fund the removal of dead, dying, or diseased trees to pave the way for healthier tree canopies and future replanting initiatives. This program is a part of a broader effort supported by the Urban and Community Forestry Inflation Reduction Act, focused on urban forest enhancement and sustainability in disadvantaged communities. The grant provides funding of up to $25,000 for eligible communities to cover the costs of removing trees affected by issues like the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), natural disasters, or other environmental threats. To qualify, communities must hold a Tree City USA designation and be located within designated disadvantaged areas as identified using the Illinois IRA Screening Tool. A detailed project proposal must be submitted, including tree locations, species, condition assessments, and photographic documentation. The tree removal must be conducted by a certified professional or qualified in-house personnel, whose credentials must be verified within the application. In addition to tree removal, the application must include a basic replanting plan. This plan should outline the future locations for planting, proposed species of trees, and a timeline for the replanting phase. Although this initial replanting plan is required, applicants are also encouraged to apply separately for an Illinois Community Canopy (ICC) tree planting grant, which offers up to $15,000 in additional funding to support these replanting efforts. Applications for the tree removal grant are due by June 1, 2025. The application process begins with submitting general information such as the project name, organization, location, requested amount, and tax identification details. Grant reimbursement will only be processed upon project completion and the submission of photographic proof that tree removals have occurred. This grant opportunity does not cover general pruning or maintenance activities and is strictly limited to tree removal services. It is reimbursable, meaning funds will be disbursed after Trees Forever verifies completion through provided documentation. The program places a strong emphasis on community involvement, requiring meaningful engagement to ensure planting efforts align with community needs and priorities. For any inquiries, applicants can reach out to the Illinois Field Coordinator, Erik Notz, via email at enotz@treesforever.org. Applicants should review the provided RFP and instructional materials for full guidance on preparing and submitting their applications.
