Philip Hauge Abelson Prize
This award recognizes individuals in the U.S. who have made significant and lasting contributions to the scientific community through research, policy, or public service.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) invites nominations for the 2026 Philip Hauge Abelson Prize. Established in 1985 by the AAAS Board of Directors, this prize honors individuals who have made significant contributions to the scientific community in the United States. The award is named after Philip Hauge Abelson, a distinguished scientist and long-time editor of the journal Science. The Abelson Prize aims to recognize individuals who have demonstrated sustained and exceptional achievements in research, policy, or civil service that benefit the scientific community. Recipients may come from various backgrounds, including public service or any field that supports scientific advancement. The prize includes a $5,000 cash award, a commemorative plaque, complimentary registration and travel expenses to attend the AAAS Annual Meeting, and a one-year complimentary AAAS membership. The prize will be formally presented during the 2026 AAAS Annual Meeting. Eligibility is open to individuals — scientists, public servants, or professionals — who have made notable and long-term contributions to science. Nominations are accepted from a wide range of entities including individuals, universities, government agencies, and affiliate organizations. Self-nominations are permitted. Nominees must uphold professional ethics and scientific integrity. Applicants must submit a nomination form through the AAAS awards portal. Required materials include a brief citation, a rationale statement up to three pages, one to two letters of support, and the nominee’s CV or resume (not exceeding five pages). Optional demographic data may be provided. All materials must be submitted in English. The nomination period runs from April 15 to June 30, 2025. The 2025 awardee, Mary Woolley, was recognized for her outstanding leadership in science policy and advocacy. AAAS encourages nominations that reflect a diversity of backgrounds, geographies, and experiences.
