Grant Description

The Community Opportunities Flexible Fund (COFF) offers funding for Los Angeles-based organizations working on systems change initiatives to benefit children prenatal to age 5 and their families. Managed by First 5 LA, COFF supports projects that align with its mission to ensure young children in LA County have their basic needs met, nurturing relationships and environments, and a foundation for lifelong well-being and success. Funding is specifically for initiatives that promote systemic change rather than direct services. Grants up to $40,000 are available for activities that: Influence public policy at local, state, or federal levels. Strengthen public systems, services, and supports. Build social movements to raise awareness of young children’s needs. Projects may focus on improving early care, reducing infant mortality and poverty, increasing maternal mental health supports, and expanding access to open spaces and culturally-affirming services. Funds may cover community engagement, policy education, research, communications, coalition building, and other community-focused efforts to amplify the voices of those impacted. Eligibility: Eligible applicants include nonprofits, social-benefit businesses, and government or tribal entities serving Los Angeles County with annual budgets under $6 million. Funds are restricted from being used for grassroots lobbying but may cover various direct expenses, such as translation services, transportation, and event costs. Deadlines and Application Process: Applications are due December 20, 2024 (for February 2025 awards), and February 14, 2025 (for April 2025 awards). Submit applications through Submittable, where applicants will complete narrative and budget sections. COFF staff may follow up with applicants for additional information. Support for Applicants: For guidance, contact Priscilla Romero via email or attend open office hours on Zoom, offered in English and Spanish. Office hours are scheduled for November 12 and December 4, 2024. An informational video and slide deck are also available to assist applicants.
