New & Experimental Works
This grant provides financial support to small and mid-size arts organizations in the Bay Area to help local artists create innovative projects that engage and benefit their communities.
The NEW Program, funded by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, is designed to support small and mid-size dance, theater, and multidisciplinary arts organizations in the Bay Area. The program aims to enable local artists to produce innovative projects that are relevant to the communities they serve. Grants are available to organizations with annual budgets ranging from $10,000 to $2 million, and the funding can be used to support artistic endeavors that deepen or expand the practice of artists, foster unique collaborations, and engage with the community. The primary purpose of the NEW Program is to provide financial support for projects that allow artists to explore new ideas and forms within their work. The program prioritizes projects that not only compensate artists fairly but also focus on compelling artistic collaborations and productions in outdoor or alternative venues. Additionally, projects must take place in San Francisco and Oakland, ensuring that the funding directly benefits these communities. Grants awarded through the NEW Program range from $5,000 to $30,000, with a grant duration of two years. The project activities must occur within the specified grant period, which runs from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2026. Importantly, at least half of the grant funds must be allocated to the artistic project team and their direct expenses, while the remaining funds can be used at the discretion of the applicant organization. Eligibility for the NEW Program is limited to nonprofit organizations or those with 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsors, provided there is a written agreement in place. Organizations must demonstrate a history of operation in specific counties, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, or Santa Clara. While the majority of artists supported by the project should be based in these counties, it is not a requirement for all artists to reside there. Additionally, organizations must have an annual budget of at least $10,000 for their last closed fiscal year, although those with a qualifying budget within the last three years may still apply. The application process requires organizations to submit detailed information about their proposed projects, including how they plan to engage with the community and support artists. Evaluation criteria will focus on the project's relevance, artistic merit, and the extent to which it meets the program's objectives. The foundation seeks to fund projects that demonstrate a clear connection to the communities served and that offer significant compensation to artists involved. The deadline for submitting applications for the NEW Program is September 22, 2024. Interested organizations should ensure that their applications are complete and submitted on time to be considered for funding.
