Transformative Art for Public Spaces Grant
This grant provides funding for local governments, nonprofits, schools, and community groups to create artistic enhancements in public spaces, promoting community engagement and economic growth.
The Transformative Art for Public Spaces (TAPS) Grant, offered by the Kansas Department of Commerce, supports initiatives that integrate art into public infrastructure to boost community vibrancy, economic resilience, and local identity. This creative placemaking program seeks to activate and enhance shared spaces, turning overlooked infrastructure—such as utility poles, benches, hydrants, and electrical boxes—into visually engaging, community-driven assets that encourage tourism, increase foot traffic, support small businesses, and foster civic pride. Launched under the department's Community Development division, the TAPS program funds projects that make public spaces more attractive and functional while offering accessible opportunities for community members to engage in local beautification efforts. Through small-scale, impactful art installations, this grant aims to drive economic growth by improving the “quality of place” for residents and visitors alike. Applicants may begin applying on April 1, 2025, and funds will be distributed on a rolling basis until depleted. Therefore, early applications are encouraged. Priority will be given to communities that have not received Kansas Commerce funding in the past three years, to promote equitable access to resources statewide. Eligible applicants include local governments, nonprofit organizations, schools, and community or arts groups. All applicants must secure permission from the municipality or property owner for any art installation, and provide documentation confirming that permission. Projects should demonstrate collaboration with local stakeholders and alignment with broader goals of place enhancement and community revitalization. Applicants are encouraged to review the full program guidelines, which detail allowable project types, selection criteria, reporting requirements, and documentation expectations. Example projects may include creative wayfinding signage, painted crosswalks, mural projects on utility boxes or buildings, and artistic interventions on seating or public furniture.
