Library Innovation Lab Grant Program
This grant provides funding to public libraries and nonprofit friends groups to create innovative cultural programs that engage and support immigrant communities across the United States.
The Library Innovation Lab (LIL) is a professional development initiative aimed at public library professionals seeking to enhance lifelong learning opportunities for immigrant communities through innovative cultural programming. Each year, ten librarians join a virtual cohort to explore immigrant engagement in their communities. Participants receive mentorship and peer support to design humanities-focused events while developing skills in project management, collaborative program design, and fostering sustainable community partnerships. Participating libraries are awarded up to $6,000 to fund program costs. Eligible applicants include public libraries and nonprofit friends groups with active 501(c)(3) status. Since 2018, 84 California libraries have implemented over 2,000 programs, engaging more than 100,000 attendees. These initiatives have strengthened community connections and deepened participants’ understanding of diverse narratives. For 2025, LIL expands nationwide, inviting five applicants from across the United States alongside five from California. The program's 2025 cycle opens for applications on October 15, 2024, with a deadline of January 6, 2025, by 5 PM PT. Award notifications will follow within one month, and the grant period runs from February 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025. Notable program successes include oral history projects, poetry workshops, cultural festivals, and children’s storytimes, showcasing libraries as vibrant community hubs. Recognized with the 2020 Schwartz Prize for public humanities contributions, LIL continues to support libraries in building inclusive, engaging cultural initiatives. An informational webinar is scheduled for November 21, 2024, at 9 AM PT for those interested in applying. For further details, contact Program Officer Kirsten Vega at kvega@calhum.org.
