Grant Description

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Food & Markets (VAAFM) announces the FY2025 Specialty Crop Block Grant Program (SCBGP) to enhance the competitiveness of Vermont’s specialty crops. Specialty crops include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, horticultural crops (e.g., honey, hops, maple syrup, mushrooms), and nursery crops (e.g., Christmas trees, floriculture). Approximately $180,000 is available for 2025, with individual grant requests ranging from $15,000 to $45,000. Applications are due by January 8, 2025, at 11:59 PM. The SCBGP is open to businesses, organizations, and individuals whose projects benefit multiple specialty crop businesses, organizations, or the public. Eligible activities include improving food safety, pest and disease control, research and development, nutrition education, and sustainability. Multi-state partnerships are encouraged to address challenges crossing state boundaries. All projects must adhere to USDA guidelines for allowable costs. The program will fund 4 to 6 projects for durations of up to two years and six months. A competitive review process involving industry, nonprofit, and government stakeholders will determine awards. Applicants are required to submit a pre-application through WebGrants by January 8, 2025. Selected pre-applicants will be invited to submit a full application in February, with final funding decisions made by April 2025. The USDA will announce awards in October 2025. An informational webinar will be held on December 3, 2024, to guide applicants through the process and answer questions. Registration is available at this link, and a recording will be shared for those unable to attend. Application templates, performance report examples, and additional resources are accessible through the program’s WebGrants portal. For more information, including eligibility and application requirements, contact Madison Berry at AGR.SpecialtyCrops@vermont.gov or 802-622-4626. The SCBGP provides an opportunity to advance Vermont’s specialty crop industries while addressing local and regional agricultural challenges.

Additional Requirements

Eligibility Any business, organization, or individual can apply to the Vermont SCBGP. However, projects must benefit more than one specialty crop business, organization, or individual to be eligible for funding. Applicants should describe how a project will benefit a specialty crop industry, a group of producers or businesses, or the public rather than a single business or organization. We encourage businesses, organizations, or individuals to collaborate with industry representatives, such as members of producer associations, to ensure that the project will benefit multiple businesses and address specialty crop industry needs. Connect with a producer association today! Applicants must follow USDA guidelines for eligible costs. See Appendix B: Allowable Costs & Activities, in the 2024 VT SCBGP Request for Applications for an overview of these guidelines.
