Enhancing Reuse of NHGRI Data Assets (R03 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This funding opportunity supports innovative research projects that utilize genomic data from a specific cloud-based platform to answer important biological questions and improve data accessibility for the scientific community.
The funding opportunity "Enhancing Reuse of NHGRI Data Assets (R03 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)" supports innovative research projects leveraging data hosted on the NHGRI Genomic Data Science Analysis, Visualization, and Informatics Lab-space (AnVIL). This program aims to encourage secondary analyses of genomic data to address compelling biological questions, develop hypotheses, and enhance the utility of AnVIL’s datasets for the broader scientific community. Projects must exclusively use AnVIL-hosted datasets, with optional integration of external data, provided it aligns with program guidelines. AnVIL is a cloud-based platform designed for secure genomic data sharing and analysis. It provides tools, training resources, and computing environments to support diverse genomic research. This initiative aligns with NHGRI’s mission to advance genomics and its application to human health, encouraging projects that increase the value of existing datasets, combine datasets for new insights, or develop analytical tools within AnVIL. Non-responsive proposals include those involving new data generation, using non-AnVIL computing environments, or analyzing data not hosted on AnVIL. The R03 mechanism supports small-scale research projects with budgets up to $125,000 per year for a maximum of two years. Approximately $1 million annually will be available for FY 2026-2027, with 5-7 awards anticipated each year. Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, nonprofits, for-profit organizations, governments, and foreign entities. Specific program requirements include annotating AnVIL workspaces for reproducibility, generating user feedback for platform improvements, and attending AnVIL community conferences. Applicants must address project feasibility, including access to necessary datasets and plans for incorporating non-AnVIL data if applicable. All proposed projects must comply with NIH’s data management and sharing policies and include budgets that detail cloud computing costs. Applications must also demonstrate how the work will advance AnVIL's utility and scientific contributions, emphasizing reproducibility, integration, and innovative use of genomic resources. Proposals will be evaluated based on significance, innovation, rigor, feasibility, investigator expertise, and alignment with NHGRI priorities. Additional review considerations include protections for human subjects, compliance with NIH policies, and budget justification. Applications are due by February 13, 2025, with subsequent annual cycles. Pre-application webinars will provide guidance on using AnVIL resources, and recordings will be available for prospective applicants. Successful applicants will participate in data-sharing efforts, attend annual community conferences, and submit progress reports detailing scientific and technical outcomes. Queries regarding submission and program details can be directed to designated NHGRI staff.
