Grant Description

The NIHCM Foundation Data-Driven Storytelling Award is an annual competition that recognizes excellence in data-driven, online reporting. The award aims to highlight journalistic works that leverage data visualization as a central storytelling tool to improve the affordability and quality of U.S. health care. The program is designed for journalists, media outlets, and research institutions that produce in-depth analyses and visual representations of health care data to inform policymakers, managed care organizations, and other stakeholders. The competition is open to articles originally published in 2024 that use data visualization as a key element of storytelling. Eligible entries may include short videos, graphics, and multimedia presentations but must maintain a focus on health care management, financing, delivery, affordability, and rising health care costs in the United States. Entries can be submitted by newspapers, magazines, websites, and publications associated with universities and research organizations. However, fully audio-visual stories should be submitted under the Television and Audio Journalism category. The award carries a prize of $20,000, which will be presented to the winning entry. Each entrant is allowed to submit up to three entries, though an article or series can only be entered into one category. The competition is free to enter, and the final submission deadline is March 28, 2025. Submissions are evaluated by independent panels of journalists and researchers. The selection criteria focus on the effective use of data visualization, clear and insightful analysis of credible data, and the impact of the story on health care management. Winning entries should produce insights that may improve health care affordability, enhance access, and inform policy and private-sector decision-making. Applicants who encounter submission issues or require further clarification can contact Mikayla Thompson at mthompson@nihcm.org. The NIHCM Foundation is headquartered at 1225 19th St. NW, Suite 710, Washington, DC 20036, and can be reached via phone at 202-296-4426.
