DoD Breast Cancer Clinical Research Extension Award
This funding opportunity provides financial support for research projects that enhance data collection and analysis related to breast cancer, specifically targeting gaps in existing clinical studies and involving consumer advocates in the research process.
The Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Breast Cancer Clinical Research Extension Award (CREA) is a funding opportunity supported by the Department of Defense's (DOD) Defense Health Program through the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP). Managed by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC), the Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) has been funded since 1992 with a mission of eliminating breast cancer for service members, veterans, their families, and the general public. This particular mechanism seeks to increase the impact of clinical breast cancer research by addressing gaps in data and sample collection due to trial limitations or early termination. The CREA is intended to support studies that extend or expand data collection, follow-up, or analysis of ongoing or completed clinical studies related to breast cancer. The award encourages research that addresses at least one of the BCRP's overarching challenges—such as preventing breast cancer, understanding metastatic mechanisms, or improving treatment efficacy—and must include a plan for integrating two or more breast cancer consumer advocates. Projects cannot include clinical trials but may involve human data or biospecimens and should provide strategies for robust data sharing and sample access. The award offers significant funding, with a total program budget of approximately $23.8 million, supporting around three projects. A single Principal Investigator (PI) application may request up to $7 million in total costs over four years, while collaborative applications under the Partnering PI Option (PPIO) may request up to $8.4 million. Both PIs in PPIO applications must submit full applications and share responsibilities equitably. Each award will be funded by FY25 appropriations and must be obligated no later than September 30, 2026. Eligibility extends to a broad range of organizations, both domestic and international, including public and private entities, for-profit and nonprofit institutions, and academic or research organizations. Both intramural DOD and extramural institutions are eligible. Applicants must be registered in SAM.gov and use eBRAP for pre-applications and either eBRAP or Grants.gov for full applications depending on organizational type. Applications are submitted in two stages: a pre-application due by June 13, 2025, and a full application by June 27, 2025. Applications will undergo both peer review and programmatic review. Peer reviewers evaluate based on criteria such as impact, strategy, team qualifications, and data sharing. Programmatic reviewers consider alignment with BCRP priorities and funding portfolio balance. Detailed application requirements include a project narrative, technical and lay abstracts, statements of work, impact and team statements, inclusion strategies, and biographical sketches. Specific attention is given to the inclusion and role of consumer advocates. Contact information for support includes the eBRAP Help Desk (help@eBRAP.org, 301-682-5507) and Grants.gov Contact Center (support@grants.gov, 800-518-4726).
