Agricultural Innovation Grant
This funding opportunity provides financial support to Pennsylvania farmers, agricultural processors, and service providers for adopting innovative technologies and sustainable practices to improve productivity and environmental stewardship.
The Agricultural Innovation Grant, introduced as part of Pennsylvania Governor Shapiro’s 2024-25 budget, allocates $10 million towards enhancing the state’s agriculture industry. This initiative aims to help farmers, agricultural processors, and service providers adopt innovative technologies, conservation practices, and renewable energy solutions to bolster productivity, profitability, and environmental stewardship. The grant marks a significant investment in Pennsylvania's $132 billion agriculture sector and is recognized as a pioneering effort nationwide to advance agricultural innovation. The grant program offers reimbursement for expenses related to planning, implementing, or expanding projects. Eligible projects should focus on using technology or practices that enhance farm efficiency, improve environmental quality, generate renewable energy, or address industry challenges like odor management and biosecurity. Innovations in data collection, cybersecurity, water conservation, energy generation from agricultural by-products, and other technologies that support sustainable farming practices are encouraged. Eligible applicants include individuals or entities involved in growing, processing, or providing technical support to the agricultural sector. This can encompass farmers with expected annual sales of at least $2,000, processors with anticipated sales exceeding $10,000, and providers of agricultural services, such as veterinary care, nutrient management, or conservation consulting. Cooperative associations involved in creating agricultural products or generating energy from agricultural commodities also qualify. The grant program is divided into three types of funding opportunities: Innovation Planning, Onsite Project, and Regional Impact grants. Innovation Planning grants range from $7,500 to $50,000 and require at least a 30% match in non-State funds. These grants support the development of strategic plans for implementing innovative agricultural practices or technologies. Onsite Project grants, which fund the adoption of innovation at individual farm sites, offer between $5,000 and $200,000 and require a 50% non-State matching fund. Regional Impact grants are intended for projects benefiting multiple stakeholders or geographic areas, with funding amounts ranging from $100,000 to $2 million, also requiring a 50% non-State matching contribution. To apply, applicants must submit a detailed proposal through the Single Application for Assistance online system by November 15, 2024. Applications should include comprehensive project narratives, budgets, and alignment with the program’s goals, along with supporting documentation such as letters of endorsement. Projects will be evaluated on their potential to deliver measurable outcomes that align with the grant’s objectives to promote agricultural innovation and sustainability across Pennsylvania. This opportunity is ideal for agricultural enterprises looking to adopt new technologies, improve operational efficiency, or explore sustainable energy solutions. Prospective applicants should ensure their projects are designed to meet the grant’s requirements and prepare a robust submission before the deadline.
