Alabama Law Foundation Grants 2025
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Alabama that deliver free civil legal services to low-income individuals, improve the justice system, and promote legal education.
The Alabama Law Foundation (ALF), a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing access to justice in Alabama, annually provides funding for law-related charitable projects. The foundation directs its grantmaking efforts toward expanding civil legal aid, improving the administration of justice, and promoting legal education. ALF’s grants are largely supported by Interest on Lawyers Trust Accounts (IOLTA) funding and a foreclosure settlement fund stemming from a national agreement with Bank of America. Approximately 80 percent of the awarded grants go to organizations delivering free civil legal services to low-income individuals. Grants are made in three primary categories: programs offering free civil legal aid to the poor, initiatives that seek to improve justice administration, and law-related educational efforts. Each December, ALF awards IOLTA grants for the upcoming calendar year beginning January 1. For the 2025 grant cycle, a second round of applications opened on April 23, 2025, and will close on May 23, 2025. Selected grantees will be announced in July. Applicants must submit their proposals through ALF’s online application portal and adhere to the Alabama Rules of Professional Conduct 1.15(l) and 1.15(m), which delineate the allowable scope of grant-funded activities. To be eligible for ALF grants, applicants must be 501(c)(3) organizations under the federal tax code. The foundation does not accept applications from individuals, nor does it allow “pass-through” funding or fiscal sponsorships. All proposed activities must fall clearly within the approved scope, focusing strictly on civil justice matters that serve individuals and families at or below 125% of the federal poverty level. Overbroad applications or those referencing ineligible activities may be negatively impacted during review. In addition to IOLTA grants, the foundation administers Foreclosure Prevention Grants made possible through a $3.3 million settlement with Bank of America and the Department of Justice. These grants support civil legal services that assist low-income Alabama residents in preventing home foreclosure. Proposals under this category are evaluated during the annual grant cycle and must similarly conform to the Rules-defined scope. Applicants are required to include specific documents with their submission. These include a Grant Budget worksheet and, for legal service providers, a CSR (Case Service Report) form. These documents help ALF assess the financial and service components of each grant proposal. For more information, applicants can contact the Alabama Law Foundation directly via email at [email protected] or by phone at 334-781-6343. The physical office is located at 445 Dexter Ave., Suite 5040, Montgomery, AL 36104, and the mailing address is P.O. Box 4129, Montgomery, AL 36103.
