Grant Description

The Louis J. Appell, Jr., Preservation Fund for Central Pennsylvania is administered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving America’s historic places. This fund specifically aims to support local preservation efforts within Central Pennsylvania, enabling communities to maintain and protect culturally significant properties. Through both bricks-and-mortar preservation and technical assistance, the program fosters public awareness and encourages proactive preservation actions. Grants ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 are available and are typically offered three times per year, with application deadlines around February 1, June 1, and October 1. Availability for each round must be confirmed via the National Trust Preservation Fund page, as the fund may not be open for every cycle. Applications are submitted through an online portal, which opens approximately 6 to 8 weeks prior to the deadline, and decisions are typically announced within 10 weeks of submission. Eligible applicants must be public agencies or nonprofit organizations, including those with 501(c)(3) status. Applicants must either be or become members of the Preservation Leadership Forum or Main Street America network before funds are released. Organizations may only receive up to three grants in a two-year period, with only one grant awarded per project phase or grant round. Projects must be located in one of 21 specified counties in Central Pennsylvania. Grant conditions require a one-to-one funding match, which may include both cash and in-kind donations. The fund supports various preservation-related activities such as restoration, rehabilitation, conservation of cultural landscapes, and public education initiatives. However, it does not support academic research, book publications, or historic resource surveys. Eligible expenses include staff salaries, consultant fees, and construction materials, whereas organizational overhead, catering, and pre-award expenses are not covered. Applications must include digital images, proof of nonprofit status, a property owner’s consent letter (if applicable), and a comprehensive budget. Projects must begin within six months of the award date or receive an approved extension, and a final report is due within one year. Evaluation criteria include the historical significance of the site, potential project impact, local support, sustainability, and the applicant's capacity to complete the proposed work. Assistance is available from National Trust staff to guide applicants through the process. For more information, applicants can contact the National Trust for Historic Preservation via email at [email protected] or by phone at 202-588-6000. The organization is located at 600 14th Street NW, Suite 500, Washington, DC 20005.
