NIDCR Small Grant Program for New Investigators (R03 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
This funding opportunity supports early-career researchers in dental, oral, and craniofacial science to develop preliminary data for future independent research projects.
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is offering the R03 Small Grant Program for New Investigators to support research in dental, oral, and craniofacial science. This program is designed for researchers establishing independent careers and aims to facilitate the development of preliminary data necessary for subsequent R01 or R01-equivalent applications. The focus is on basic, clinical, behavioral, and population science research addressing strategic priorities within NIDCR’s mission. This funding opportunity does not support clinical trials or biomarker validation studies. Eligible applicants are new investigators who have not previously competed successfully as a Principal Investigator (PI) for significant independent NIH awards such as an R01. Past recipients of two NIDCR R03 awards or any R21 or R56 grants are ineligible. Researchers must demonstrate a pathway toward research independence, supported by institutional commitments such as laboratory and office space, resources, and evidence of transitioning to an independent position. A required letter of support must explicitly confirm these commitments. The R03 grant provides up to $200,000 in direct costs over two years, with a cap of $100,000 per year. Applicants must dedicate at least 2.4 person-months annually to the proposed project. Submissions must include a detailed conceptual framework for a future R01 or equivalent application, outlining how the R03 research will lay the groundwork for subsequent studies. These future plans should demonstrate how the current work aligns with NIDCR’s strategic goals. Applications will be evaluated on significance, innovation, rigor, and feasibility. Review criteria will emphasize the likelihood that the research will advance understanding in the field and serve as a foundation for an R01. Institutional support and the investigator’s potential for establishing an independent research career will also be key factors. Additional review will assess protections for human subjects, inclusion of diverse populations, and data-sharing plans. The program operates on NIH’s standard R03 deadlines, with key dates in February, June, and October annually. Applicants must complete registrations with SAM.gov, eRA Commons, and Grants.gov. Submissions must conform to NIH’s guidelines for data sharing, scientific rigor, and transparency. Successful applicants will be expected to report progress annually through the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR) system. For assistance, NIDCR provides contacts for scientific, peer review, and financial queries. This funding opportunity represents a key initiative to support early-career scientists in establishing themselves in dental, oral, and craniofacial research.
