Grant Description

The Defense Tech Accelerator Challenge, hosted by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) in partnership with the Defense Innovation OnRamp Hub, aims to identify and support cutting-edge innovations that address critical needs within the Department of Defense (DoD). This challenge serves as an entry point for innovative startups to participate in a four-month accelerator program, located in Renton, WA. The program is designed to help early-stage companies navigate the complexities of the defense market and prepare their technologies for DoD applications. In total, the challenge offers $15,000 to each finalist, alongside significant support including tailored mentorship, DoD engagement opportunities, and the chance to scale their technologies. Up to eight finalists will be selected by a team of subject matter experts. These companies will be given the opportunity to enhance their readiness for DoD market engagement through a comprehensive curriculum that covers defense tech market insights, acquisition processes, and technology readiness development. Additionally, the accelerator program provides the opportunity for cross-startup collaboration and the possibility of follow-on opportunities, including access to Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants, Other Transaction Agreements (OTAs), and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs). To be eligible for this opportunity, companies must be U.S.-owned and operated and actively registered in SAM.gov. Applicants must also be early-stage companies, such as those in Series A or earlier, with limited or no prior DoD contracts. Furthermore, applicants must be non-traditional defense contractors, as defined by the DoD's 2023 Other Transactions Guide. Finalists must also commit to attending the 4-month accelerator program, which includes attending 10 days of on-site programming. This on-site programming will take place approximately every 3-4 weeks throughout the program's duration, and while the primary location is Renton, WA, the program may also be hosted at other locations to enhance partnership opportunities. Key dates for the challenge are as follows: the solicitation release will take place on February 10, 2025, with an "Ask Me Anything" session scheduled for February 19, 2025. The solicitation will close on February 27, 2025, and the down-selection process will begin thereafter. Finalists will be announced on March 14, 2025, and the accelerator program will launch the week of March 24, 2025. The program will conclude the week of July 21, 2025. The challenge seeks innovations in various technological fields aligned with DoD mission needs, such as energy, autonomy, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and emerging technologies like additive manufacturing and augmented reality. Eligible technologies must be commercially viable and dual-use, with a demonstrated potential for scalability, cost-effectiveness, and operational impact. The final innovations should also be feasible for rapid prototyping and field testing and ready to adapt based on stakeholder feedback. Applicants can engage in the "Ask Me Anything" session to clarify the technical requirements, eligibility criteria, and challenge mechanics. This interactive session will provide valuable insights into the objectives of the challenge and help companies refine their submissions. Interested parties can also submit questions to prizechallenge@diu.mil for further clarification.
