Local Community Grants Program
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Orange County, California, to support innovative STEM and STEAM educational projects for youth aged 17 and younger.
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation offers Local Community Support Grants aimed at fostering innovative STEM and STEAM initiatives within the Orange County, California region. These grants are part of the Foundation’s broader mission to support young scientists and contribute to future scientific breakthroughs. The Foundation has a long-standing legacy of supporting scientific research and education and is deeply invested in strengthening community-based educational projects. Past local support initiatives have included diverse organizations such as the Irvine Public Schools Foundation, Discovery Cube Orange County, and the Orange County Science & Engineering Fair. Local Community Support Grants fund community-based projects, events, or activities that align with the Foundation’s objective of supporting youth in scientific exploration. Projects should involve hands-on learning experiences and leverage technology for educational impact. Examples of previously funded initiatives include STEM teacher training, development of science curricula, space satellite projects for high school students, and science festivals. These projects are required to serve youth aged 17 or younger within Orange County and must be implemented within one year of funding. Proposals should reflect a well-defined target audience and clearly demonstrate how the initiative will lead to meaningful educational outcomes. Eligible applicants must be U.S.-based nonprofit organizations holding 501(c)(3) status or an equivalent designation. The organization must serve the Orange County area significantly through the proposed project. Collaborative efforts are allowed if a lead organization that meets all eligibility requirements is clearly designated. The Foundation does not consider applications from non-U.S. entities or institutions. Projects must be innovative, promote the Beckmans’ legacy of innovation in science and technology, and potentially serve as a model for future initiatives. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and must be submitted at least three months prior to the planned project start date. The submission package must include a detailed project proposal addressing funding priorities, a budget justification, contact information, tax ID number, IRS designation, and the organization’s website. The Foundation will follow up with applicants for clarification if needed and communicate funding decisions upon completing the review process. Mid- and post-project reporting is mandatory. Preference is given to projects that build organizational capacity or serve as seed funding for new initiatives rather than sustaining ongoing programs. The Foundation emphasizes projects that demonstrate thoughtful planning and a clear implementation and evaluation strategy. All promotional material related to funded projects must credit the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation as the project sponsor and include its logo. Grantees are also encouraged to involve Foundation staff in related events or activities. For inquiries, applicants can reach out to the program administrator, Kaerie Ray, at 949-560-4232 or via email at kray@beckman-foundation.org. The grant program officially opened on March 14, 2022, and remains open on a rolling basis.
