Grant Description

The Forestry - Conservation Education Small Grant Program (ConEd) for 2024 provides funding for conservation-focused educational initiatives targeting youth in Montana, from pre-K through 12th grade. Funded by the Montana Fire Suppression Fund and the USDA Forest Service, this program is administered by the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC), Forestry and Trust Lands Division. The program supports both formal classroom education and informal learning settings to foster conservation awareness among young people and educators across the state. Funding priorities include outdoor educational activities, training and professional development for conservation educators, facilitator training costs, and logistical expenses for hosting related events, such as meeting space and refreshments. Additionally, grants can cover travel and registration for conservation-related training and professional development. Eligible applicants include Montana-based state, local, and tribal governments, non-profit organizations, community groups, educational institutions, individual educators, and private individuals. The program has an annual funding pool of up to $30,000, with individual awards typically capped at $3,000. Larger grants may be considered in special cases with program manager approval. Recipients must use awarded funds within one calendar year of approval. While matching funds are not required, applications showing additional support from the applicant's organization or project partners may be more competitive. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until funds are fully awarded, with review periods continuing until December 31, 2024, or until the fund is depleted. The first application review period closed on April 15, 2024, and additional applications will be reviewed continuously. This grant offers a significant opportunity for Montana organizations and educators to expand conservation education programs and enhance youth engagement with natural resource stewardship.
