Grant Description

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), through the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), has issued a forecast for the upcoming renewal of the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the Multiple Chronic Disease Research Centers. This initiative, identified by the opportunity number FOR-MD-25-002, aims to support regional comprehensive research centers focused on improving the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of multiple chronic diseases (MCDs), particularly in populations that experience significant health disparities. The forthcoming NOFO is a renewal of RFA-MD-21-007 and is designed to foster both the development of new centers and the support of existing ones. These centers are expected to conduct innovative research that either develops, tests, and evaluates novel healthcare strategies or implements proven interventions across a variety of settings, including community and healthcare environments. The priority is on interventions that are evidence-based, replicable, reproducible, and generalizable. Chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and chronic lower respiratory conditions are leading causes of death and disability in the United States. The initiative particularly emphasizes addressing the growing prevalence of these diseases among children and adolescents. Each research center is required to focus on at least two chronic conditions that are either co-occurring or linked through shared social contexts, risk factors, or management strategies. Proposals aligned with the goals of the Make America Healthy Again Commission, particularly those targeting health disparities, are highly encouraged. The grant will utilize the P50 (Critical Trial Required) activity code, and applications will be expected to feature collaborative research incorporating clinical, behavioral, implementation science, and community-engaged methodologies. This is a forecasted opportunity and applications are not yet being accepted. The estimated posting date is May 16, 2025, with applications due by July 25, 2025. Awards are anticipated to be announced by September 30, 2025, which is also the expected project start date. The total program funding is estimated at $55 million, with eleven awards expected. For further information or to discuss the opportunity, interested parties should contact Dr. Dolly Penn at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities via email at Dolly.penn@nih.gov or by phone at 301-496-8676.
