2025 Chargers Champions School Grant Program
This grant provides funding to public and private schools in San Diego and Imperial Counties to enhance physical education, nutrition, and athletic programs, promoting physical literacy among students.
The 2025 School Grant from Chargers Champions is designed to improve physical literacy among students in San Diego and Imperial Counties. Physical literacy is defined as the motivation, confidence, knowledge, and understanding necessary to value and take responsibility for lifelong engagement in physical activity. This grant opportunity is open to both public and private schools within these counties and seeks to fund physical education, nutrition, and athletic program enhancements. Schools may apply for a single grant award based on student population size. Schools with up to 500 students may apply for $25,000, schools with 501 to 999 students may request $40,000, and schools with 1,000 or more students may request up to $75,000. The project proposal must utilize the full amount of funds requested and include a detailed, itemized budget. Applications that do not include a complete budget with supporting documents such as contractor estimates and equipment photos will not be considered. Final grant amounts may be adjusted at the discretion of Chargers Champions if any portion of the proposed project does not meet funding guidelines. Applicants must submit their complete grant applications electronically by May 5, 2025, at 11:59 PM PT. All submissions must include detailed information about the proposed project, including its size, number of students served, estimated costs, and how the project will improve physical literacy and meet grade-level standards. Schools are also required to describe how they will sustain the project after the grant funds are used and how the impact on students' physical literacy will be measured. Eligibility requirements include demonstrating legitimate need, adherence to California Education Code minute mandates for physical education, and ensuring that all physical education classes are taught by credentialed teachers. Public schools must show that physical education aligns with the California Model Content Standards and includes instruction in the eight curricular areas required by state law. Private schools must verify that their physical education programs are of comparable length and quality. Applications from San Diego Unified School District require pre-approval from the district's Research and Development Department. Applicants must review Administrative Procedure 320 and consult with Scott Giusti at sgiusti@sandi.net or 619-725-7126 before submitting their application. Additionally, proposals must comply with district safety and installation standards, and no portion of the grant may be used for instructor or administrator salaries or indirect costs. Applicants must also submit information on current physical education equipment and facility conditions, if they are applying for equipment-related funding. All application documents, including photos or other supporting materials, should be shared via a viewable Google Drive or Dropbox link with access granted to Taylor Chavez at taylor.chavez@chargers.nfl.com. Finalists will be notified in late May 2025.
