Grant Description

The *High-Impact/High-Risk (HIHR) Research Awards* from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) support exploratory cancer research projects that could lead to significant advancements in understanding, diagnosing, or treating cancer. These awards offer up to $250,000 for a project duration of up to two years, with the intent of funding innovative ideas that lack preliminary data but show potential for groundbreaking findings. Eligible applicants are Texas-based entities, including both nonprofit institutions and for-profit companies. Principal Investigators (PIs) must hold a doctoral degree, reside in Texas, and dedicate at least 5% effort to the project. Only one co-investigator is allowed per application. This program emphasizes high-risk ideas and does not require preliminary data, but strong scientific rationale is essential. Applications should not resemble "mini-R01s" and are meant to explore new concepts or paradigms. Applications are due by December 10, 2024, and must be submitted via CPRIT’s Application Receipt System (CARS). Proposals will be reviewed for scientific merit, innovation, and relevance to cancer research. Awards will be announced in May 2025, with funding starting June 1, 2025.
