Learning Links Grant Program
This program provides mini grants to public school teachers for innovative, hands-on learning projects that engage students and enhance their educational experience.
The Learning Links program, administered by The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, offers mini grants up to $1,000 to public school teachers for innovative and hands-on learning projects. These grants aim to enhance students' enthusiasm for education and support their academic progress, ultimately encouraging them to remain in school through graduation. The initiative is funded by the Ben W. and Dixie Glenn Farthing Charitable Endowment Fund and the Cherokee County Schools Foundation Endowment Fund. Grants are designated specifically for experiential learning projects that involve students in interactive and creative educational experiences. These projects should deviate from typical classroom instruction and be closely aligned with the existing curriculum. Applications must include clear and specific plans, detailed budgets, and realistic implementation timelines. Successful projects have previously involved community volunteers, integrated different subjects or age groups, and were often spearheaded by dedicated teachers or teams. Each teacher or classroom may apply for up to $1,000, including group projects, which are allowed to apply for up to $1,000 per participating teacher or classroom. Projects may be repeated from previous years, provided they are reevaluated on their individual merit. Schools may submit multiple applications, though each must be submitted and approved by a lead teacher and the school principal. Grant funds can be used to compensate external experts who interact with students but cannot be used to pay teachers or staff. They cannot typically be used for standard budgetary items, equipment, or incentives unless these are integral to the project and not otherwise obtainable. All field trips must include preparation and follow-up components, and involve the full intended group of students. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on the last Friday in September, with the grant cycle opening in mid-August. Funded projects must be conducted between January 1 and June 1, with all funds expended by the end of that period. Evaluation and funding decisions are made by a volunteer committee and announced in November. Applicants are required to submit a final report on grant use and may be subject to additional reporting or site visits. For assistance, applicants may contact Amber Harrelson-Williams, Scholarship Officer, or Diane Crisp, Senior Grants Manager. Contact details and further guidance are available through the Community Foundation’s website or by phone.
