Grant Description

The Dayton Foundation offers discretionary grants to a wide range of nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. These grants are intended to address significant community needs or launch new initiatives not currently served by existing entities. The Foundation evaluates programs across diverse sectors, including social services, health, the environment, and the arts. Geographically, funding is focused on Montgomery, Miami, Greene, Darke, Preble, and the northern part of Warren County in Ohio. The Foundation prioritizes projects with strong community impact and unique objectives that align with the greatest needs in the Dayton Region. The primary purpose of these discretionary grants is to support either the initiation of new, innovative projects or to provide additional resources to special efforts led by already-established nonprofit organizations. Projects submitted should reflect a demonstrated need and the potential for meaningful change in the community. The Foundation specifically seeks proposals that address community issues with clear objectives and achievable outcomes. Applicants may request funding ranging from $7,500 to $75,000. For projects with budgets under $300,000, the grant request must not exceed 25 percent of the total project cost. The number and amount of grants awarded in each cycle depend on donor fund availability and specific donor restrictions. These stipulations ensure that funds are distributed responsibly and in alignment with donor intentions. To apply, organizations must first confirm their eligibility and review several resources provided by the Foundation, including a discretionary grants orientation video, grant guidelines, a policy on vehicle purchases, and an audit exemption policy if applicable. Applications must be submitted via the Foundation's new grants application portal. A downloadable worksheet is also available to assist applicants in preparing their responses before submission. Organizations that previously received discretionary grants must complete and submit a final report detailing the grant's use. The application process includes three key submission dates in 2025: January 3, July 7, and October 3, all due by 4:00 p.m. A pre-recorded virtual orientation session is also available to assist prospective applicants in understanding the grant process. All communications related to the grant, including questions and reports, should be directed to Tania Arseculeratne, Senior Community Engagement Officer, or through the general contact channels of The Dayton Foundation.
