This grant provides over $125,000 in funding to support 30 Black artists in the Philadelphia area who create projects celebrating the city's rich Black music heritage through storytelling and creative expression.
The Black Music City 2025 Grant Program is now accepting applications, offering over $125,000 in funding to support 30 Black artists who aim to celebrate Philadelphia’s rich Black music heritage. This grant, now in its 5th year, provides a unique opportunity for creators to honor and draw inspiration from the city’s legacy of Black music while showcasing their talents through meaningful storytelling and creative expression. Projects eligible for funding must celebrate Philadelphia’s Black music heritage by connecting to its artists, musical styles, venues, movements, or traditions. Whether honoring past or present influences, projects should highlight the cultural significance of Black music in Philadelphia and its lasting impact. This program is designed for Black artists and cultural creators living in the Philly Metro area, South Jersey, or Delaware, who have a strong vision and wish to engage deeply with the local creative community. Applicants should consider submitting if their project captures Philadelphia’s Black music legacy and uplifts its cultural and community spirit. The grant encourages projects that connect authentically to the city’s history and resonate with its communities. Artists must also be able to commit to a year-long program, including participation in events, meetups, and a final showcase on June 19, 2025. However, this opportunity may not be suitable for those whose projects primarily focus on personal work or do not directly relate to Philadelphia’s Black music culture. Applications will be evaluated by a Selection Committee of respected artists, cultural leaders, and community advocates. Submissions will be scored based on the following criteria: Storytelling & Theme: Projects should tell meaningful stories that celebrate Philadelphia’s Black music heritage and honor its legacy. Creativity: The work should demonstrate originality, innovation, and a fresh perspective that brings Philadelphia’s cultural spirit to life. Personal Impact: Proposals should authentically connect to Philadelphia’s communities and culture. Past Work/Experience: Applicants must show a demonstrated ability to execute their vision, based on previous work and experience. This grant program offers a remarkable platform for Black artists to celebrate Philadelphia’s Black music heritage and contribute to its cultural vibrancy. By creating projects that reflect the city’s musical legacy, artists have the opportunity to engage with the community, highlight the importance of Black music, and showcase their creativity on a larger stage. Eligible artists with a strong vision are encouraged to apply and become part of this powerful celebration of Philly’s cultural history.
