Grant Description

The AAAS Mani L. Bhaumik Award for Public Engagement with Science was established in 1987 by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to recognize scientists and engineers who excel in public engagement with science. Since 2019, the award has been endowed and named after quantum physicist Mani L. Bhaumik, known for his contributions to excimer laser technology which facilitated the development of Lasik eye surgery. Bhaumik's endowment emphasizes the importance of elevating recognition for scientists who engage the public in science communication beyond their professional responsibilities. The award focuses on public engagement activities that promote dialogue between scientists and the public on issues related to science and technology. These activities are defined as the nominee’s active efforts to connect with the public through accessible and interactive methods. The award aims to recognize individuals who not only communicate scientific concepts but also foster meaningful exchanges with diverse audiences, often responding to public interests or societal needs. The recipient of the award will receive a monetary prize of $10,000, a commemorative plaque, and recognition at the AAAS Annual Meeting. Nominations for the 2025 award open on April 15 and close on June 30, 2025, at 11:59 ET. Nominations must be submitted electronically in English through the AAAS nomination site. Eligible nominees must be individual scientists, mathematicians, or engineers, active or retired, who have significantly contributed to public engagement in science. Groups, institutions, and AAAS employees are not eligible. Required nomination materials include contact information for both nominee and nominator, a brief citation, a nomination rationale of no more than three pages, the nominee's CV (limited to five pages), and two to five representative samples or documents illustrating public engagement contributions. Letters of support are optional but count toward the five-sample limit. Social media links used for public engagement can also be included. The award selection committee evaluates nominees based on several criteria, including the extent and impact of public engagement, strategic and innovative communication approaches, and demonstrated excellence in their scientific field. Only one individual is selected each year, and decisions are finalized by the AAAS board. Nominees may be asked to participate in additional AAAS public engagement activities. For further inquiries, applicants should contact awards@aaas.org and include "Mani L. Bhaumik Award for Public Engagement" in the subject line. The 2025 recipient, Brian Greene, was honored for his ability to explain complex scientific concepts to diverse and youthful audiences, especially through platforms like the World Science Festival.
