Grant Description

The Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation created the Facing Race Awards in 2007 to honor individuals across Minnesota who are actively working to dismantle racism and its widespread effects. This initiative aims not only to recognize commendable efforts but also to elevate the dialogue and action occurring statewide around racial justice and equity. The Foundation uses these awards as a platform to spotlight critical anti-racism efforts and to foster continued conversation and mobilization within communities. For 2025, the Foundation invites nominations for both youth and adult individuals who are committed to eliminating racism within Minnesota. Nominees must be Minnesota residents and must have carried out impactful work within the state. This includes acts of bravery in confronting racism, persistent dedication to equity and justice, and community engagement that advances racial equity. Honorees will each receive a recognition grant which can be used to support their personal community work or can be donated to a Minnesota-based nonprofit organization of their choice. Nominations are open from Monday, April 28 at 10 a.m. and will close promptly on Wednesday, May 14 at 3 p.m. All nominations must be submitted through the official portal; emailed or mailed nominations will not be accepted. Self-nominations and community nominations are permitted. Prior consent from the nominee or their guardian is required before submission. Past recipients and current Saint Paul & Minnesota Foundation staff or board members are not eligible and cannot participate in the nomination process. The review process will consider how nominees have impacted their community, especially the East Metro Area, which includes Dakota, Ramsey, and Washington counties. Key evaluation points include the nominee’s role in reducing racism, recent notable achievements, and the tangible benefits brought to their communities. Selection notifications will only be sent to chosen awardees due to the typically high volume of submissions. Nominators will receive confirmation that their entry was received. Individuals needing language assistance or nomination forms in Hmong, Somali, or Spanish, or those requiring other accessibility accommodations, may email FacingRace@spmcf.org. Up to four recipients will be selected and announced later in the year.
