Grant Description

The Charge Up Michigan Program is a state-funded initiative administered by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) to build a comprehensive DC fast charging network throughout Michigan. The program’s primary goal is to ensure electric vehicle (EV) users can feasibly complete long-distance travel within Michigan and to nearby states and Canada. This grant offers financial support to public and private organizations to install publicly accessible EV DC fast charging stations. Funding supports eligible project components including charging equipment, site preparation, installation, network fees, and signage. Applicants are required to participate in a utility rebate program and must meet the program's location and prioritization criteria. Applicants must ensure their selected site is located at an eligible node as identified in the “Charge Up Michigan” map layer. Only locations with “Remaining Chargers Needed” greater than zero qualify. Furthermore, applicants need a utility site assessment and letter of support, and must obtain quotes from hardware/software and installation vendors. The grant provides up to $70,000 or 33.3% of project costs, whichever is less, and matches the utility rebate contribution. Awards are disbursed on a reimbursement basis, contingent upon submission of invoices and proof of payment. Applicants must provide monthly progress updates and report usage data. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until all funds are allocated. The program prioritizes projects in underserved “nodes” or high-demand urban areas as determined by EV placement optimization studies conducted by Michigan State University. The primary contact for this grant is Nicki Guggemos, who can be reached at GuggemosN1@Michigan.gov or 517-449-9304. Additional application guidance and documentation are available on the Michigan.gov website, including a sample grant agreement, application form, and a partners directory.
