Paul Robeson House & Museum Artist Residency in Pennsylvania

The Paul Robeson House and Museum Artist Residency offers a unique opportunity for artists in West Philadelphia to engage with the legacy of Paul Robeson while contributing to the local creative community. Hosted in a newly renovated studio space within the West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance building, adjacent to the Paul Robeson House & Museum, the residency aims to foster artistic expression and community connection through public programming. The inaugural residency runs from March to June 2025, during which the selected artist will explore the history and impact of Paul Robeson. The artist will receive a $10,000 stipend and an additional $5,000 to support public programming initiatives. Applications open on December 16, 2024, and close on January 17, 2025, with decisions announced in February 2025. To be eligible, applicants must be at least 18 years old and reside, work, or maintain significant ties to the West Philadelphia community. Their artistic work should align with or respond to the traditions and histories of Black artists. Additionally, a background check will be required for the final candidate, given the museum’s involvement in youth programming. This residency is a collaboration between the Paul Robeson House & Museum, the West Philadelphia Arts Council, and The Sachs Program for Arts Innovation, with primary funding provided by the William Penn Foundation.
