This grant provides funding to museums, tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations for projects that support the consultation, documentation, and repatriation of Native American cultural items and human remains.

$150,000
Closed
Nationwide
Grant Description

The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Consultation/Documentation Grants provide funding to museums, Indian Tribes, and Native Hawaiian organizations for projects related to the repatriation of Native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. These grants support consultation activities to determine cultural affiliation, repatriation requests, and related research. Documentation projects aid in identifying the geographical origin, cultural affiliation, and acquisition history of cultural items, ultimately facilitating their return to rightful communities. Eligible project activities include consultation meetings, training programs, coalition development, compliance-related activities, and the creation of databases or digitization efforts to support repatriation. Grants do not fund infrastructure projects. Applications must propose discrete projects that can be completed within a two-year term. The program does not require cost-sharing, and funding availability depends on appropriations.
