Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Charitable Foundation Grant
This grant provides funding to nonprofit organizations in Maryland that focus on improving mental health, aging services, and general health care for underserved communities.
The Leonard and Helen R. Stulman Charitable Foundation was created to continue the philanthropic legacy of its founders, who supported the Jewish community, the arts, and medical organizations during their lifetimes. Following Mr. Stulman's passing in 2000, the foundation shifted its contributions to focus on mental health, health, and aging. Managed by trustees and an executive director, the foundation operates under the Baltimore Community Foundation. The foundation supports programs with a specific focus on mental illness, aging, and medical care, particularly emphasizing underserved and minority communities in Baltimore and across Maryland. Within mental health, the foundation aims to promote community recovery for individuals with serious mental illnesses, improve access to treatment, and support the use of evidence-based practices. In aging, the foundation supports services that allow older adults to remain in their communities and meet unaddressed health and mental health needs. In general health, it prioritizes chronic disease prevention and access for disadvantaged populations. Grants typically range from $25,000 to $150,000 and are primarily awarded to organizations in Greater Baltimore and Maryland. Ninety-five percent of all grant funding is restricted to this region. The foundation does not fund capital projects, public K-12 education, individual scholarships, or conferences. Applicants must be 501(c)(3) public charities and must not discriminate based on race, creed, national origin, color, physical handicap, gender, or sexual orientation. The process begins with a required two-page letter of inquiry signed by the executive director and board chair. This letter should include the requested amount, a project summary, and brief background on the applying organization. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, and selected organizations may be invited to submit full proposals. For those invited, a proposal template from the Maryland Philanthropy Network is available. Interested applicants should email letters of inquiry to Cathy Brill, the Executive Director, at [email protected] or call (410) 332β4171 for more information. There is no fixed open or close date due to the rolling submission structure, but applicants should prepare to engage with the foundation well in advance of desired project start dates.
