Source Water Protection Project Grant

The Source Water Protection Project Grant, administered by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR), is designed to promote awareness, education, and implementation of source water protection plans. This grant is part of the Drinking Water State Revolving Funds (DWSRF) set-asides authorized by Section 1452(g) and (k) of the federal Safe Drinking Water Act. The primary objective is to assist community public water systems in developing and implementing voluntary local source water protection plans to safeguard raw water sources from contamination, thereby ensuring access to clean and healthy drinking water. Eligible applicants for this grant are community public water systems that derive all or part of their water from a raw water source. To qualify, these systems must comply with all national primary drinking water regulations or be actively working towards compliance. The grant provides financial assistance for projects that either develop new source water protection plans or implement existing ones. For implementation projects, the applicant must have a current endorsement from MoDNR for their protection plan. These projects can include activities and best management practices aimed at achieving the goals outlined in the protection plan. The grant offers reimbursement for approved eligible activities as per a financial assistance agreement between MoDNR and the public water system. The maximum award amount is $25,000, and while matching funds are not required, they may influence project selection and ranking according to priority point criteria. The application process is currently open, with a priority application period ending on June 30, 2025. Applications submitted between July 1, 2025, and August 15, 2025, may still be considered if funds are available, on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are ranked competitively based on priority criteria, and the State Revolving Fund Affordability Grant Eligibility Evaluation is used to determine priority scoring, although it does not affect eligibility.
