Grant Description

The Illegal Dumpsite Cleanup Program provides funding assistance to political subdivisions for the cleanup of solid waste disposed of along public roadways or ditches. Through this program, items such as household waste, white goods, construction and demolition waste, and furniture are removed from the illegal site and disposed of in a permitted facility or recycled. Funding is limited to five percent of the total revenue from the disposal fee collected from landfills in the preceding fiscal year, with approximately $120,000 available annually. Eligible applicants include municipalities, counties, Natural Resources Districts, Sanitary Improvement Districts, Solid Waste Agencies, and Public Power Districts. Reimbursement is available for costs such as labor, equipment usage, vehicle mileage, and disposal fees. The political subdivision must contact the NDEE Waste and Air Grant Unit to confirm eligibility for reimbursement, use existing staff or contract services for cleanup, and complete the cleanup. After submitting the request for reimbursement form, applications are reviewed by NDEE staff. If approved, reimbursement is issued or placed on a future payment list. Reimbursements are issued on an ongoing basis with no specific deadlines.
