Grant Description

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) has announced its intent to publish a new Funding Opportunity Announcement (NOFO) titled "Alcohol-HIV/AIDS Program Project Comorbidities, Coinfections, and Complications Research: Intervention and Cross-Cutting Foundational Research." This opportunity will be issued under the Program Project Grant mechanism (P01), which supports multidisciplinary research programs. The notice aims to give potential applicants adequate time to establish collaborations and prepare proposals. The forthcoming NOFO is expected to be released in July 2025, with an application deadline in September 2025. The program seeks to fund research focused on the intersection of alcohol use and HIV/AIDS, particularly how alcohol-related issues influence HIV transmission, disease progression, and treatment. The primary objective of the initiative is to support human studies that drive operational and implementation research addressing alcohol and HIV/AIDS. Funded projects should develop comprehensive systems for tracking complex patient outcomes related to both conditions and evaluate interventions designed to reduce the effects of alcohol use and comorbidities on HIV progression, especially in aging populations. This aligns with the broader goals of both the NIAAA Strategic Plan for Research and the NIH Strategic Plan for HIV and HIV-Related Research. Emphasis is placed on generating findings that are translatable into real-world interventions to prevent and treat HIV in the context of alcohol use. This funding will support research in several areas, including the role of alcohol use and disorders as risk factors for HIV and related noncommunicable diseases, understanding the etiology and progression of HIV-associated comorbidities, coinfections, and complications, and the social and behavioral dynamics contributing to HIV outcomes. The program also promotes community-based and community-led research to identify effective strategies for prevention, treatment, and care, especially in underrepresented populations. The grant opportunity anticipates supporting approximately eight awards, with a total program funding of $9,000,000. The maximum award for each project will be $1,000,000. The program does not require cost sharing or matching funds. Applications will be solicited under the P01 clinical trial optional mechanism, allowing inclusion of clinical trials if desired. Eligible applicants include a broad range of entities such as public and private institutions of higher education, nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status, small businesses, state and local governments, tribal governments and organizations, independent school districts, and public housing authorities. Full eligibility details will be specified in the upcoming NOFO. The official NOFO is forecasted for publication on July 1, 2025, with applications due by September 25, 2025. Awards are expected to be made by July 1, 2026, and projects should begin by August 1, 2026. This is not a rolling grant opportunity and is not confirmed to be recurring. Further updates will be provided through the official Grants.gov listing.
