Green Horizons Project
This funding opportunity provides $40,000 to recognized Tribal governments for projects that promote sustainable farming and ranching practices, emphasizing environmental restoration and the integration of traditional ecological knowledge.
The Green Horizons Project is a funding initiative administered by the Sovereign Equity Fund (SEF) in partnership with the Native American Agriculture Fund (NAAF). This opportunity is part of SEF's broader mission to promote environmental sustainability and support capacity building in Native agricultural and food systems. The 2025 Request for Applications (RFA) is specifically designed to empower state- and federally-recognized Tribal governments that are leading sustainable farming and ranching efforts. The grant provides $40,000 in funding over a 12-month period beginning October 1, 2025. The funds can be used for personnel, direct, and indirect costs to support a range of activities including agricultural and ecological restoration, program delivery, and skill-building initiatives. Projects that integrate traditional ecological knowledge are particularly encouraged. Applicants must describe how they will implement sustainable practices in areas such as soil health, water conservation, and climate resilience. Only recognized Tribal governments are eligible to apply. The lead applicant must oversee the project, manage the budget, and serve as the primary point of contact with SEF. While the lead entity must be a Tribal government, collaborations with nonprofits, educational institutions, and community organizations are welcome. Eligibility will be confirmed based on lists published in the Federal Register and by individual states. Applications must be submitted online through a portal managed by Foundant Technologies by June 15, 2025, at 11:59 PM Alaska Time. The application process includes several detailed questions related to the applicant’s vision, contribution plan, implementation strategy, team capacity, budget, sustainability, and evaluation. Each section of the application is scored by reviewers with experience in sustainable agriculture. Grantees selected for funding will be required to sign a grant agreement and a media release form. They must also provide quarterly updates and a final narrative and financial report. Confidentiality and conflict of interest protocols are strictly enforced throughout the review process to maintain fairness and integrity. For assistance, applicants can contact SEF at [email protected]. Although responses may take up to three business days, SEF provides technical support and FAQs on its website. More information and a Foundant tutorial are also available to guide applicants through the process.
