Grant Opportunity for Legacy Businesses
This program provides financial support to long-standing Detroit businesses that have been operating for at least 30 years and have significantly contributed to the community's culture and economy.
Detroit has launched a new $500,000 Legacy Business Grant Program to support long-standing businesses that have been pivotal in shaping the city’s history and culture. The initiative, championed by City Council President Mary Sheffield, provides financial aid to businesses that have been operating for at least 30 years and have made significant contributions to the community. Eligible businesses can apply for grants of $15,000 or $50,000 to cover various expenses, ensuring their continued role in Detroit's economic and cultural landscape. The program will allocate $15,000 grants to two businesses from each of Detroit’s seven City Council districts and two citywide $50,000 grants for businesses with broader impact. This initial funding round will support 16 businesses, though city officials are working with Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation to secure long-term funding. Sheffield highlighted the importance of legacy businesses, describing them as "the backbone of our economy" that have weathered decades of challenges, including economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic. These businesses have not only provided jobs and services but also contributed to the character and vitality of Detroit’s neighborhoods. The program was inspired by conversations with Lauren Stovall, founder of the Institute of Legacy Preservation and daughter of Hot Sam’s founder, Tony Stovall. Hot Sam’s, a men’s clothing store established over 100 years ago, serves as a prime example of the resilience and cultural significance of Detroit’s legacy businesses. This initiative reflects the city’s commitment to honoring and sustaining its heritage while supporting the longstanding businesses that have been integral to Detroit’s story. Applications for the grants are open, offering these institutions a chance to secure funding to sustain their operations and preserve their legacy.
