Grant Description

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), plans to release a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) titled "Mucosal Immunology Studies Team (MIST) (U01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)." This NOFO is forecasted under opportunity number NOT-AI-25-031 and is expected to open in July 2025. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support a cooperative research group aimed at advancing foundational understanding of immune mechanisms and immune regulation at mucosal surfaces, specifically in the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital tracts. This initiative seeks to foster innovative, paradigm-shifting research that introduces new ideas, approaches, and technologies to address challenging questions in mucosal immunology. Through this program, NIAID aims to build a collaborative network of investigators engaged in exploring critical gaps in the knowledge of mucosal immune responses. Though clinical trials are not allowed under this opportunity, a high priority will be placed on mechanistic and translational research that could potentially inform future clinical strategies. The funding will be issued through a cooperative agreement mechanism (U01), emphasizing a close working relationship between NIAID staff and award recipients. NIAID anticipates supporting approximately five awards under this opportunity, with a total program funding amount of $3,000,000. Cost-sharing or matching funds are not required. The expected award date is July 1, 2026, with project start dates aligned with the same day. Eligible applicants include a diverse range of organizations such as state and county governments, independent school districts, public housing authorities, Native American tribal governments (both Federally recognized and others), higher education institutions (public, private, and state-controlled), for-profit entities including small businesses, and nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) IRS status (excluding institutions of higher education). The estimated application due date is November 3, 2025, giving potential applicants ample time to form collaborations and develop their proposals. Though the application package is not yet available, NIAID encourages interested researchers and institutions to begin preparing in advance. For specific questions, applicants can contact Deborah L. Hodge, Ph.D., at hodged@mail.nih.gov or by phone at 240-551-3037.
